The Journey Behind Bernhard Esterer Photography

Bernhard Esterer photography began with a single gift — a Leica R7 camera from his father — igniting a lifelong passion for photography, travel, and storytelling. What started as curiosity soon evolved into a career dedicated to capturing Africa’s untamed beauty through fine art and wildlife photography.

Before fully embracing photography, Bernhard built a successful culinary career, working as a gourmet chef in some of Europe’s finest restaurants, including the prestigious Schwarzer Hahn at Deidesheimer Hof in Germany.

From Europe to Africa

Leaving behind the structured world of fine dining, Bernhard embarked on an unforgettable adventure: cycling over 3,500 miles across the United States, from San Francisco to Miami Beach. This journey shaped his vision of freedom, exploration, and life beyond boundaries.

After returning briefly to Salzburg, Bernhard travelled to South Africa, where he settled near De Rust on a wine farm. In 1994, he opened a restaurant in Oudtshoorn, which became a success during the rise of tourism in the region.

From Hobby to Fine Art Photography

What began as a creative outlet soon became a professional pursuit. Through dedication, experimentation, and encouragement from friends, Bernhard Esterer photography developed into a recognised artistic brand.

In 2014, Bernhard opened his first gallery at Montague House, a historic ostrich feather palace in Oudtshoorn. His fine art photography is now collected and displayed in homes and private collections around the world.

A Deep Love for Africa

Despite travelling across many countries and continents, Bernhard’s heart remains deeply connected to Africa. The African wilderness — vast, untamed, and alive — continues to inspire his work.

Whether sitting beneath a Baobab tree beside a campfire or listening to wild lions and elephants in the distance, these moments shape the emotion behind every image.

African Wildlife Photography Today

While Bernhard spent many years focusing on portraiture, his primary focus today is African wildlife photography. His work captures powerful encounters, textures, movement, and emotion — creating timeless visual stories.

Every image in Bernhard Esterer photography reflects a deep respect for nature, adventure, travel, and the freedom of the wild.

Through the lens of his camera, Bernhard continues to document the spirit of Africa for collectors, art lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
